Last Tuesday, May 25th, at the University of Panama the ¨ Chronic Diseases Social and Community Determinants¨ Lecture took place. The lecturer in charge was Dr. Ana Victoria Diez-Roux Researcher and Professor at the School of Public Health of the University of Michigan and a member of the Institute of Medicine ¨OIM¨ of the National Academy of Sciences. Dr. Diez-Roux is the author of most of the results obtained as part of the research performed in the City of Buenos Aires, Argentina and another study that was performed in the City of Baltimore, United States of America. The results presented were novel and attracted the interest of participants in relation to the topic.
The lecturer addressed the relevance of the availability of the proper infrastructure in the cities, which permits prevention and control of chronic diseases. Dr. Diez-Roux made special emphasis on the need cities have of recreational areas, to motivate the population for physical activities, such as walking instead using the automobiles, the use of public transportation, among other. She also presented results obtained from studies performed in the city of Baltimore, United State of America that compares the offer of and the access to healthy foods in different neighborhoods with different levels of urban features; and how this affects the prevalence of overweight and obesity in the population of those areas in the city.
The purpose of this activity was, that the group of researchers who are undergoing training in research projects, in collaboration with the CIIPEC and local people from the country where the event is held, must have the time to share and learn topics of interest to be served by visiting professor or professors, helping to widen their areas of expertise and to create future opportunities.
