Partners in the Struggle against Diabetes
From the 30th of June to the 2nd of July last, Dr. Manuel Ramirez, General Coordinator of CIIPEC, participated in the Latin American Diabetes Summit, at Salvador de Bahia, Brazil. This Summit was organized by the World Diabetes Foundation, WDF (View programme).

The purpose of the Summit was to be a forum for the interaction of acting participants that are influential in the field of non-communicable diseases, opinion leaders, WDF partners and the media. All this, with the goal of creating a committed acting participant network that may be able to impulse prevention and medical attention programs in the developing world. Also, governments that are creating policies and financing bodies were asked to prioritize prevention and medical attention.

Dr, Ramirez was requested to make a presentation on capacity formation models, at country level, for the research on chronic diseases and diabetes. His presentation was based on CIIPEC´s internal development model (View presentation). The other presentations of the summit are available at http://www.worlddiabetesfoundation.org/composite-3281.htm.

WDF was established by its founder, Novo Nordisk on the year 2002. The foundation is dedicated to support prevention and treatment of diabetes in the developing world through the financing of sustainable projects. The foundation creates partners and acts as a catalizer to support others to do more and is trying around the word, to educate and advocate, raise awareness and take care and alleviate those individuals suffering from diabetes. Currently the foundation is financing 219 world level projects, two in Mesoamerica and one in the Dominican Republic.

WDF is very interested in financing national and regional projects in Latin America, within the health system. Any institution, governmental or non-governmental body or any interested organization that would like to apply, may be able to consult the areas subject of financing, selection criteria, basis, time terms, etc., at www.worlddiabetesfoundation.org

The International Diabetes Federation, IDF, is an organization that encompasses 200 national diabetes associations in 160 countries. IDF finances research projects that are related with the diabetes topic, through the Bridges Program financed by Eli Lilly Co. For more information visit: http://www.idf.org/

CIIPEC is willing to technically support those countries that are interested in participate, as well as to generate proposals for the development of the region in the nutrition related chronic diseases area.
